Yuming Zhu

Oil/Pastel/Sumi                Style: Transism

Originally from Shanghai, China, Yuming began to study under the painting masters at the age of ten.  He blends the styles of the East and West into his oil, pastel and Chinese watercolor paintings.  Capturing the light and darkness of the European masters while combining the familiar and textured ink brush strokes found in Chinese painting and calligraphy, Yuming finds that his art keeps him “spiritually wealthy and healthy”.

Along with art, Yuming began a lifetime fascination with literature, mythology and philosophy. “Painting awakes the inner world of one’s wisdom.” “Painting is like poetry and music, yet a vision stimulation of the arousal of imagination and deep sensation of the ritual of life”. After he received his BA from China, he came to the States to study art and psychotherapy. His first solo art show was in 1989 at California State University, Sonoma, where he later earned a Master of Arts degree. He began a pursuit of helping others find their inner voice and expression through psychotherapy and his own artful expression grew in bounds. And, for the first time in his life, he began to learn that art can be not only an avocation, but a vocation as well.

Yuming Zhu’s popularity has steadily increased, particularly among collectors along the United States West Coast, since his early Sonoma Valley exhibitions of the late 1980’s to his current shows throughout the Pacific Northwest.  His work has been displayed in prominent regional galleries, including the Asian Art and Cultural Center in Oakland, California, Seattle Asian Art Museum, SOLOVEI Art Gallery, Simon Edwards Galley, Dots and Doodles Gallery, Fine Art Vision Gallery, Wise Designz, Art Concept Gallery, Astoria Fine Art Gallery, and others.  In 1996, Yuming was recognized as a Sumi Chinese Watercolor master when he was invited to demonstrate Sumi methods in the Seattle Art Museum/KCTS Public Television “Five Thoughts of Asian Art” program.

Today, Yuming Zhu is a successful artist and entrepreneur. He founded an art, art supply company--Paragon International Arts. He also teaches Sumi style painting in community colleges (Bellevue, Seattle Central and Edmonds), Kirkland Arts Center, and sumi workshops through local and National Sumi Societies in nationwide, e.g. Florida, Alaska, Oregon, Ohio and others. Yuming is striving to express modern life phenomenon and obsession of music through his own unique heritage. He describes his effort of making statements through his work as Lyrical Impression and Idealistic Expression.  Musical and rhythmic movement, passion and sometimes humor are flowing in his painting.  “Transism”, (the term he answers to people when asked what style he paints), is the constant evolving way he describes himself in painting.
